6 SIMPLE STEPS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY DETOXIFICATION
THAT YOU + YOUR FAMILY CAN BEGIN TODAY
1. ELIMINATE TOXIC "DEAD" FOODS FROM YOUR DIET
These foods include all that foods that are no longer living or devoid of fiber and other nutrients. Meat, Dairy and Fish are three of these "foods" (although I personally do not consider them to be food.) Because meat is the dead flesh of a being that was once alive, it is top on my list of toxic foods to avoid.
Meat and dairy contain animal protein, saturated fat, and, in some cases, carcinogenic compounds such as heterocyclic amines (HCA) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which are formed during processing/cooking. Meat also contains hormones, which increase your cancer risk as well as many other chronic diseases.
Meat, dairy products, and eggs all contain high levels of cholesterol and saturated fat and contribute to some of our top killers: heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and various types of cancer. Saturated fat is present in all meat and fish, even chicken and turkey cooked without the bird's skin on. Decades of scientific study have linked dietary cholesterol to cardiovascular disease — our country’s number-one cause of death, killing nearly 2,200 Americans daily. According to a study published by the ADA (American Diabetes Association,) people who eat high amounts of animal protein are 22% more likely to develop diabetes. Saturated fat has even been linked to breast cancer, as well as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and cognitive decline.
MEAT, DAIRY, FISH + FOOD POISONING
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that 70% of all food poisoning is caused by contaminated animal flesh. Food borne diseases, such as E. Coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, cause an estimated 76 million illnesses, 325,000 hospitalizations, and 5,000 deaths in the United States each year. These numbers are growing by the second.
Eating meat puts you at a greater risk for food poisoning because animal products are often tainted with fecal contamination during slaughter or processing. Fecal contamination in chicken, especially, is a major problem we face today. According to a Consumer Reports study, 97 percent of raw chicken in U.S. supermarkets is contaminated with bacteria that could make customers sick. So if you eliminate animal products from your diet, you'll also be eliminating your exposure to the most common carrier of these bacteria.
Simply put... Less Meat, Dairy, Fish and Eggs means less toxicity (and nasty sh*t) in the body.
2. ADOPT A PLANT BASED DIET
Consuming a diet centered around natural, whole foods grown from the earth is the most powerful step you can take towards immediate detoxification and cleansing.
Researchers have shown that a more plant-based diet may help prevent, treat, or reverse some of our leading causes of death, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. Plant-based diet intervention groups have reported greater diet satisfaction than control groups, as well as improved digestion, increased energy, and better sleep, and significant improvement in their physical functioning, general health, vitality, and mental health. Studies have shown plant-based eating can improve not only body weight, blood sugar levels, and ability to control cholesterol, but also emotional states, including depression, anxiety, fatigue, sense of well-being, and daily functioning.
Only one way of eating has ever been proven to reverse heart disease in the majority of patients: a diet centered around whole plant foods. If that’s all a whole-food, plant-based diet could do—reverse our number-one killer—shouldn’t that be the default diet until proven otherwise? The fact it may also be effective in preventing, treating, and arresting other leading killers seems to make the case for plant-based eating simply overwhelming. (NutritionFacts.org)
3. DETOX HEAVY METALS
Toxic heavy metals such as mercury, aluminum, copper, cadmium, lead, arsenic, nickel, chrome, alloy, and steel are hidden antagonizers that can find their way into our bodies and wreak havoc. If you want to heal from chronic illness and symptoms, removing the heavy metals in your body and brain is an incredible place to start. Below I share some of the symptoms triggered by heavy metals, the history of heavy metals, and a heavy metal detox plan.
Heavy Metal Toxicity Symptoms
Heavy metals can cause ADHD, ADD, autism, depression, OCD, mood disorders, Alzheimer’s, focus, concentration and memory loss issues, and much more. They can also increase any viral or bacterial issues you may be battling. Additionally, when viruses such as Epstein-Barr and shingles feed off toxic heavy metals, this can produce symptoms such as tingling, numbness, fatigue, anxiety, heart palpitations, ringing in the ears, dizziness and vertigo, as well as neck pain, knee pain, foot pain, pain in the back of the head, and a variety of other aches and pains that are often attributed to other causes.
It's virtually impossible not to take in a certain amount of these toxic heavy metals in our modern era, so it's vitally important to our health that we get them out before they can wreak further havoc on our health.
Fortunately, it is quite easy and inexpensive to cleanse your body of heavy metals by adding certain supplemental foods to your diet. Similar to chelation therapy, a medical procedure that involves the administration of often-synthetic chelating agents that will bond with heavy metals in the body and remove them, these foods also electrically attract and bond with metals, but not the beneficial nutrients, and help eliminate them out of the body.
The following are eight simple foods that will likely reduce heavy metals toxicity in your body:
Hawaiian Spirulina: This edible blue-green algae draws out heavy metals from your brain, central nervous system, and liver, and soaks up heavy metals extracted by barley grass juice extract powder. Take 2 teaspoons mixed in water, coconut water, or juice.
Barley grass juice extract powder: prepares the mercury for complete absorption by the spirulina. This nutritive grass has the ability to draw heavy metals out of your spleen, intestinal tract, pancreas, thyroid, and reproductive system. Drink 1-2 teaspoons mixed into coconut water or juice.
Cilantro: Goes deep into hard-to-reach places, extracting metals from yesteryear (so it’s great for that mercury inheritance you’re carrying around!). Blend one cup in a smoothie or juice, or add to salad or guacamole.
Wild blueberries: Draw heavy metals out of your brain tissue, healing and repairing any gaps created by oxidation when the heavy metals are removed. It is important to use wild blueberries, as they possess unique phytonutrients with special detoxifying capabilities. The potent antioxidants in wild blueberries help reverse any oxidative damage left behind by the heavy metal removal. This is especially important for your brain tissue—in fact, wild blueberries are the most powerful food for halting or in some cases reversing Alzheimer’s and dementia. Eat at least one cup daily. Note: while cultivated blueberries are nutritious, they lack the metal-drawing ability of the wild blueberries. Wild blueberries can be found in the freezer section of most supermarkets.
Atlantic dulse: In addition to mercury, this edible seaweed binds to lead, aluminum, copper, cadmium, and nickel. Unlike other seaweeds, Atlantic dulse is a powerful force for removing mercury on its own. Atlantic dulse goes into deep, hidden places of the digestive tract and gut, seeking out mercury, binding to it, and never releasing it until it leaves the body. Eat two tablespoons of flakes daily, or an equal amount of strips if it’s in whole-leaf form. Note: As it comes from the ocean, if you are concerned about the dulse itself having mercury, be aware that Atlantic sea dulse will not release any mercury it might possess into the body. It holds on to the mercury as it works its way through, and even grabs onto other metals along the way and drives them out as well. Atlantic dulse is a critical part of the team because it can hang out near the finish line (i.e., our colon), waiting for the other foods that have been grabbing on to heavy metals along the way. It serves as emergency backup, helping ensure that all the heavy metals that made it as far as the colon actually leave the body.
Garlic: It is an antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic food. Garlic binds heavy metals in the body and helps us to detox. Garlic is best consumed raw, but still presents detoxifying abilities when cooked. Always wait ~10 minutes after cutting or crushing garlic to cook it to best ensure that the allicin has formed.
Activated Charcoal: Activated charcoal actually uses a thin film on its outside surface to bind toxins and poisons. The porous surface has a negative electric charge that attracts positively charged toxins and poisons; it binds them, and escorts them out of your body through the elimination process of your intestines.
These foods are best (and most detoxifying) when combined with one another and enjoyed/digested within 24 hours. Each as many of these foods as possible each and every day for best results.
4. ELIMINATE TOXIC BEAUTY + CLEANING PRODUCTS FROM YOUR HOME
What we put on our skin ends up in our bloodstream.
Here are the 10 Ingredients you'll want to remove from your household (and beauty routine) immediately. Look for all natural alternatives that promote less toxicity in your everyday life.
What to look for: anything that ends with “paraben” like butylparaben, ethylparaben, methylparaben, propylparaben, etc.
Where they're found: Found in shampoos and other bath products, lotions and makeup
Why you should care: These popular preservatives mimic the hormone estrogen and are linked to cancer, reproductive toxicity, immunotoxicity, neurotoxicity and skin irritation. They may also increase the risk of breast cancer.
What to look for: Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, 1,4 Dioxane and quarternium-15
Where it's found: Formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are found in the Brazilian Blowout, other hair treatments and some nail polishes
Why you should care: Considered a known human carcinogen, this preservative was made famous by the “Brazilian Blowout.” It can also cause asthma if inhaled, neurotoxicity and developmental toxicity.
What to look for: This word on a label could mean between 10 and 300 different chemicals, but companies aren't required to list anything specific in their "fragrance" mixture. Be wary of any label that lists fragrance or "parfum."
Where it's found: Fragrance is found in everything from face cream to perfume to soap … basically any product with a scent.
Why you should care: Common synthetic fragrances contain hormone disrupters such as phthalates, which have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive problems like early puberty and the feminization of baby boys.
• Propylene Glycol
Where it's found: Propylene Glycol is found in many cosmetics and food products.
Why you should care: A science-y word for antifreeze, this chemical alters our skin structure so other chemicals can penetrate deeper, and it causes reproductive, brain and nervous system harm in animal studies.
• Coal Tar Dyes
What to look for: “CI” followed by a 5 digit number
Where they're found: Found in many hair dyes, lipsticks and other cosmetic products.
Why you should care: Used extensively in cosmetics, coal tar dyes are a mixture of many chemicals that are derived from petroleum and cause cancer and neurotoxicity. These chemicals have been banned in food products.
Where it's found: Talc is found in powder products, such as eye shadow, baby powder, face powder, and other loose-mineral cosmetics.
Why you should care: This absorbent and anti-caking agent is known to be toxic and is linked to cancer. Asbestos-containing talc particles have been known to cause tumors in human ovaries and lungs.
• Mineral Oil
What to look for: Mineral oil, or anything that sounds like the word "petroleum"
Where it's found: Mineral Oil is found in baby lotions, creams and skin ointments, as well as cosmetics.
Why you should care: This is a crude oil derived from the distillation of petroleum to produce gasoline. It is a known human carcinogen, and it also causes skin problems.
• Aluminum Zirconium
What to look for: Any aluminum compound
Where it's found: Aluminum is found in antiperspirant products.
Why you should care: Used as the antiperspirant in deodorants, this heavy metal has been linked to the development of Alzheimer’s disease and has been found in breast cancer tumors. It is also a respiratory, neurological, and developmental toxin.
• Sodium Laureth
What to look for: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
Where it's found: Sodium Laureth is found in most skin care and cosmetics, as well as household and car cleaners, and engine degreasers.
Why you should care: One of the most dangerous ingredients used in products, this chemical is linked to skin damage, eye damage and liver toxicity. It is also toxic to the environment.
• BHA & BHT
What to look for: Butylated Hydroxyanisole, Butylated Hydroxytoluen
Where they're found: BHA/BHT is found in moisturizers and makeup.
Why you should care: Considered “a reasonable anticipated human carcinogen,” this chemical preservative interferes with normal reproductive system development and thyroid hormone levels. It can also cause skin depigmentation, liver damage, and stomach cancer in animal studies.
5. REMOVE TOXIC PESTICIDES AND INSECTICIDES OFF OF YOUR FOOD
Pesticides can be found in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. They are found in our soil and even in our breast milk. These pesticides are the only toxic substances released intentionally into our environment to kill living things: to kill weeds (herbicides), insects (insecticides), fungus (fungicides), rodents (rodenticides), and others. They are used almost everywhere — not only in agricultural fields, but also in homes, parks, schools, buildings, forests, and roads. High levels of these chemicals are most commonly found in children, whose bodies and developing organs are particularly vulnerable. Children take in pesticides in the womb, at home and daycare, and on schools and playgrounds. Using MRI technology, researchers found that even low levels exposure to the widely used insecticide chlorpyrifos in utero caused irreversible brain damage (Toxic Action Center.)
The last place we need these sprays is on our food before it enters our body.
We purchased a Kangen machine that produces 2.5 pH (strong acidic) as well as 11.5 pH (strong alkaline) electronically reduced Ionized water that removes pesticides off our food before cosumption. Up to 80% removal of pesticides according to a study done by the National Institure of Health (PubMed.gov)
To remove pesticides with Kangen Water, we simply fill a large bowl/tub (or you could fill your entire kitchen sink!) with 11.5 pH water which emulsifies entirely with oil and removes oil based pesticides, insecticides, etc. off of our food and into the water. Allow vegetables to soak in this water for 3-5 minutes and clean off any evident dirt or buildup. Then we rinse our produce off under 2.5 pH water which eliminates dirt or bacteria left behind during the cleaning process.
Our food lasts noticeably longer in the fridge after we remove these waxy sprays, so we aim to wash all of our fresh market produce (and conventional organic produce) as soon as we get home from the store and keep it in the fridge already washed for the week ahead.
6. AVOID ALL FLUORINATED + CHLORINATED DRINKING WATER
AND SHOWER/SWIMMING WATER TOO!
Our skin is our largest organ, so it is no wonder we absorb more toxic exposure from showering in tap water than we do drinking it.

Fertility complications (Higher levels of fluoride correspond to lower fertility rates, particularly with drinking/showering water levels)
Effects on both male and female hormone levels/ hormonal health
Most water purification machines are not adequate for removing fluoride from water. Many require a separate pre-filter to be used during the process of efficient fluoride removal. We avoid fluorinated drinking water by using an in home water filtration system. I personally love and reccomend pre-filters for our Kangen machine made by a company called "IonFacuet." Chlorine is used to disinfect water used in our pools, pipes and showers. Chlorine’s potential toxicity is not limited to mold and fungus and has been linked to many serious health dangers for humans. Consider this... chlorine is toxic enough to be a chemical weapon and categorized as a “choking agent”. Inhalation of chlorine gas can cause difficulty breathing, chest pains, cough, eye irritation, increased heartbeat, rapid breathing, and death.
To avoid chlorine in our Hawaii household, we use an ANESPA Shower filtration system that removes 99% of chlorine in our shower water. The ANESPA removes harmful chemicals such as chlorine, as well as dirt, bacteria and mold. It then re-mineralizes our shower water with natural hot spring rocks such as Tufa and powerstone. It simply connects to your regular shower head and re-diverts the water momentarily through the filtration system and mineral rocks before releasing it through your shower head or into your bathtub. A chemical free clean is always best. We purchased this machine with the intention of lessening our chemical exposure and curing my chronic dry skin/eczema. I have already noticed incredible topical changes within only 2 months.
